Addressing the Challenges of MS Care in Rural Areas
For the more than 1 million Americans living with multiple sclerosis (MS), early diagnosis and effective treatment are essential. However, in rural communities, accessing specialized MS care can be difficult. Many residents rely on local hospitals and clinics as their first—and sometimes only—option for diagnosis and treatment, highlighting the need for better resources and support.
Goals of the Partnership
This collaboration between the National MS Society and the National Rural Health Association (NRHA) focuses on three key objectives:
Educating rural healthcare professionals about MS symptoms and diagnosis.
Enhancing access to comprehensive MS care through partnerships with rural clinics and hospitals.
Addressing health disparities by overcoming systemic barriers to care in underserved areas.
Bridging the Gap in Rural MS Healthcare
“Partnering with the National MS Society allows us to address a critical gap in rural healthcare by equipping providers with the knowledge and resources to diagnose and treat MS effectively,” said Alan Morgan, CEO of the NRHA. “This collaboration reflects our commitment to breaking down barriers and ensuring equitable care for all rural Americans.”
Expanding Access Through Collaboration
The partnership will leverage the NRHA’s extensive network of over 2,000 hospitals and 5,000 clinics, including primary care providers, critical access hospitals, and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). This broad reach ensures that healthcare professionals in even the most remote areas have the tools they need to support MS patients effectively.
A Shared Commitment to Better Care
“Access to quality care should not depend on where you live,” said Julie Fiol, Associate Vice President of Clinical Innovation and Strategy at the National MS Society. “This partnership underscores our shared commitment to ensuring that people living with MS in rural communities have the support and resources they need to thrive.”
