People ask me all the time at work if I write for fun or just for work. Most are surprised that I write for fun on top of all of the content that I create for work. They all say the same thing, they are amazed that I still have the creativity I need to write stories even after all of the brainpower it takes to put out content 8 hours a day.
I hate to break it to you. The creativity doesn't always come out when I want it to. Like most things in life, this too takes work. I'm not one of the lucky writers in the world where the words just come out exactly the way I want them to whenever I need them too. It takes research, notes, first drafts, revisions, anger, frustration and finally excitement when it finally comes together.
Here's the perfect example: I've started writing three different novels in the last 2 years. All three are very different from one another and I write, essentially, the first chapter and my mind goes elsewhere. Three great ideas that I haven't been able to continue. I hopefully will, maybe not all three, but I WILL finish one of them.
What I need to do is sit down with one of them and really dig into the story. Build characters. Discover how the story plays out. Plan out the climax and the resolution. Get every detail hashed out and really see what I can do with that story.
It's hard but doable. I've got the idea, that's this first step.
It's very different than my day job where there is topic and a plan in place. Do the research, write the blog or the landing page copy and you're done.
Sometime it's a little tricky to go from one style of writing to another but it's fun, and I love it. Yes, there are people out there that have the creative part of the brain front and center and always in gear. I'm not one of those people, everything that I put out there takes time and thought, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Till next time.
